Congrats on 60 years of LCM, and an especially warm congratulations to Richard for his enthusiasm, sense of humour and service to the university community. I know a lot of students, myself included, have been helped by his open door and open heart. Big hug Richard!
How wonderful to celebrate 60 years of Lutheran Campus Ministry on the UofA campus. We were fortunate to work with four different Lutheran campus chaplains over our long tenure at the University. Tom and I have been connected to this effort for many years – as board members, leaders for marriage preparation and student retreats, synod campus ministry committee member and chair and as recipients of the many other wonderful activities that the campus chaplains developed and offered. We watched the re- initiation of the Festivals of Lessons and Carols, a particularly important activity to begin the advent season for all of us. As UofA professors we know the importance of the ministry that our Campus Chaplains have provided to students and to professors as well. It is easy for students and professors to put their faith aside when they are studying and striving for academic achievements. But we believe this is a time in a person’s life and a place when faith must have a chance to grow and develop. As we carve out new roles and new knowledge, we need to enrich our faith experience as well. Our campus chaplains help us do that on a daily basis. And they help us all deal with the stresses that are so much a part of university life. Often I had a chance to introduce students to not only our Lutheran chaplain but to another of the chaplains who work together to give faith a place at the University. We especially valued the special opportunities that the chaplains offered to professors as we met for breakfast to explore faith issues as well. Our congregation, Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church in Edmonton, was fortunate to be able to interact with students and the campus chaplains in a personal way. When the congregation made the decision to close, it was an easy decision that Campus Ministry and especially Lutheran Campus Ministry at the UofA would be supported by a grant in perpetuity. We send our thanks to all the former Lutheran Campus Chaplains and especially to Chaplain Richard, our current chaplain, for his 25 years of dynamic leadership! And to Dana who has enriched his ministry with her special gifts. What a great partnership! Your energy and friendship is valued so much. The work of Lutheran Campus Ministry Edmonton has a rich legacy that gives us hope for a continued strong future leadership in our church. Drs. Tom and Dianne Kieren
Richard, what a gift you have been to this synod and more especially to campus ministry in Edm. Your consistent presence on campus and at Luther House and your listening ear to students and anyone who needed you have been so appreciated. Thanks for your support and love of our own children while they were students there as well. And for your friendship. Congratulations on this 25 anniversary and we pray God's blessing for you of good health and wisdom!
Lutheran Campus Ministry at the U. of A. was a great part of my life as I met so many wonderful people. Richard started his ministry just as I left school, but Richard was important to us as he made worshipping meaningful for my future husband Darryl as we started dating when we went to services Sunday nights at St. Joseph's chapel. Richard has been a strong faith presence at university helping during different times that make me happy to say I support Lutheran Campus Ministry.
Richard, Congrats on this amazing milestone. I wish I were in Edmonton to celebrate with you. Thinking back on my "formative" years, I have to say that Lutheran Campus Ministry and Richard had such an immense impact not only on my faith journey but also my life philosophy and several values I hold dear. I will never forget the amazing people I met during that time, and I am so happy that you have had such a rich calling, Richard. I have so many fond memories but one general one is just enjoying the Holden evening prayer services: the peaceful ambiance of a Sunday evening while the music wafted over the community, preparing us spiritually for the challenges of the week ahead. God bless.
Thank you, Richard and LCM, for providing our daughter, Kathleen, with a safe, supportive, nurturing environment during her two years at The Martin Luther House while she obtained her BEd degree. We saw her develop life-long friendships and spread her wings as she took on various roles and responsibilities within the LSM. We are very grateful for the role you played in helping her become the self-assured, responsible young lady she is today. Congratulations on your milestone anniversaries! May God's blessings be with you as you continue His very important work.
Congrats and blessings to LCM-Edmonton for 60 years of ministry with and among the students at the U of A. This ministry has impacted numerous lives and have added dynamism to the life of the church, Many of our current church leaders came through campus ministry, which is testimony to the powerful witness on campus. And Richard, congrats and blessings to you for 25 years in this ministry. You have defined campus ministry in Alberta and across the ELCIC. It was an honour and privilege to serve with you on the board during my short time in the northern conference, and I look forward to seeing many, many more years of fruitful ministry from you with LCM-Edmonton!
Dear Richard, Congratulations on your 25 years of ministry! I am so grateful that a friend told me to check out the Lutheran Student Movement early in my time at the U of A. After I met you, you gave me my first bible, and took me through my first Bible study. I have good memories of the LSM dinners and activities that I attended. Rebecca and I wanted to also thank you for your continuing involvement in our lives after I graduated. You led us in saying grace at our wedding reception, and during that grace delivered hands down the funniest Lutheran Pastor joke that I have ever heard (not that I've heard many, but it was still great :) We also appreciate the support you showed us when we lost Xavier, from your prayers, your meeting with us, and your attending his memorial. Thank you from our family for being there in good times and bad, and for the ministry that you have done both on and off the U of A campus. Scott, Rebecca, Liam, and Rory
Dear Richard Thank you for your dedication, creativity, inspiration and love to countless students and families as you have served for 25 years as campus chaplain in Edmonton. My children were eager to participate in LSM and you were a large part of their connection. I also remember exciting times on the board both at meetings and at your home where you and Dana graciously hosted us. I also remember the very beginnings of this ministry 60 years ago and am thankful for God's leading and guidance. May God bless this special celebration year. Naomi Parker
At the banquet, I will share some memories that go back 60 years to the beginnings of campus ministry at Edmonton and for Canada as a whole, and look forward to connecting with former students and friends during my time as campus pastor there 1968-1977. But neither me nor any of the former campus pastors can beat the amazing longevity of Richard's 25 years of service. Raising a glass and a prayer. Ken Kuhn.
Pastor Richard! Many congrats on this wonderful milestone! My experience at UofA would have been much different without you and my involvement in LSM. I have so many fond memories - Tuesday evening suppers, playing for evening services; Holden evening prayer especially, Dana's homemade bread and the fellowship afterwards. I can recall our many visits over coffee at HUB mall (you always make time for others!); not to mention trips to the Mustard Seed downtown. You have a true servant's heart and nowhere is this more evident than in your ministry and friendship with others. I remember your pastoral care at the time of my Dad's passing. Shortly after, Joe and I were blessed by our Marriage Preparation course with you. It all adds up to countless memories and every reason to say Thank You! You are one of a kind! Many blessings as you continue in your ministry!
A fond memory from 1992: "You look like you just tied up the Cheshire Cat!" Congrats Richard on 25 years of immersion within this special ministry.
Congratulations Richard on 25 Years of Ministry - that is amazing!!!! Thank you for your servant heart leadership and for always taking time for a special conversation with each of your students and each of your friends! Your ministry in the lives of so many at a critical time when identity is being formed is profound. Because of your guidance and role modeling, it was during my involvement with Campus Ministry that I was able to grasp just how amazing God is and how reliant I am on God for His unconditional love, forgiveness, peace, and joy! Your sense of humor and vigor for life also let me come to understand God's desire for all of us to live life abundantly! Thank you for your ministry and thank you for continuing to be an important person in my life!
60 years of campus ministry and 25 years with Richard at the helm is a big milestone! Campus ministry and Richard have been an important part of my formation and journey to ministry. My grandfather was a pastor on the committee that decided to purchase the original house. I attended LSM as a "pre-sem" student doing my undergrad, learning much from Richard about theology and ministry. And then I had the privilege to serve on the campus ministry council during a period of exciting renovations at the new house. Campus Ministry has been vital touchstone of faith for so many young adults and quite frankly is the reason that many have NOT slipped away from the church. The church should be grateful for a thriving ministry among young adults when ministry to that cohort is nearly absent most other places in the church. Richard in particular has been an important reason for this life-filled ministry. No matter whether you are student, a hanger-on, a member of the church at large, a member of the council or a colleague, Richard has the grace and wisdom to treat you with the same love, compassion and respect. Truly a Christ-filled servant. Thank you and blessings Campus Ministry. Thank you and blessings Richard.
Richard: Your ministry with LCM-Edmonton is proof of the old saying that "The call of the church is the call of God," for your call to Campus Ministry was absolutely "a match made in heaven." You and I were called to chaplaincy in the same summer, and have many shared memories that cover more than 20 years. You are a great pastor, chaplain, theologian, and friend to all. You and Dana have richly blessed many lives through your passionate caring and incredible hospitality. Thank-you for all your service to young people and to the church. Blessings abound!
Congratulations on 25 years as chaplain, Richard! You have sustained this ministrry and made it stronger. Your presence on campus is appreciated very much, and I also appreciate you as a friend. May God bless you and your loved ones, and continue to give you inspiration and energy for your work as chaplain!
